Well, here it is!!! Hopefully there aren't any other GameSpy v2.20r releases out yet, but if there are, let's hope people are smart enough not to nuke this. This works PERFECTLY in *ALL* 32-bit Windows versions. There is no overhead, there is no modification of GameSpy (works on all versions), there is no in-memory patching (what a HELL of a job THAT was to get it to work with all versions). Nothing undocumented either -- I'll give all the details right here... How it works? Well... Windows has a special file named "Hosts", wher e you can put in various fixed IP addresses and hostnames, which will be resolv ed by WinSock apps just like normal DNS, but without doing DNS queries, that is, you have FULL CONTROL over which IP address the system gets for whatever hostname! ...and guess what? So many MILLIONS of people use GameSpy that the authors have to have separate machines for the registration servers (since they have that server check where everyone connects to their reg server(s) every time they fire up GameSpy). That machine is named "reg.gamespy.com". So, one line in the Hosts fi le does the trick: 127.0.0.1 reg.gamespy.com ...and GameSpy cannot connect to the registration server(s) any more! Also, now that SpySoft added an ad banner display feature into the program, I did the same thing for their ad server: 127.0.0.1 spy-software.com Anyway, you can use my keygen (RBSgsk22.exe) to generate a custom registr ation key, and when you click "OK" it will import it into GameSpy for you, f ind your Hosts file, and automatically add those two lines to it! ...then you're set -- then just run GameSpy.exe (yes, any regular, un patched, "registered users only" or "shareware" version will work just fine). Oh, you can use the IRC chat feature that's built into GameSpy too now (ju st use something OTHER than "gamespy@gamespy.com" for your e-mail address if you plan to use the IRC chat feature (since that is sent to whatever IRC server you connect to, and viewable by anyone who does a /whois <nickname>). You see, simple is better -- as long as it works on all versions, and reliably! This does! Installation Notes: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ See above =) P.S. You may have a hard time transferring your buddy lists over from a win9
20; installation if you tried exporting, then importing via regedit (in both OS 's). This problem has to do with a bug in NT2k that doesn't let it read the win&# 57;x .reg file properly (in win9x, "\\n" is a valid separator for mu ltiple items in one line, but in NT2k it isn't). Also, in NT2k, when you write out some registry files in NT4 (REGEDIT4) format, "\n" (0x0A) is con verted into "\r\n" (0x0D,0x0A... (or 0dh,0ah for us assembly guru s)). This causes NT2k to not be able to read that SAME DATA (that it exported) back in. The solution is to edit the REGEDIT4-format files with a hex editor, and re place the "\\n" (I'm using two back-slashes to signify that it is tex t, not the actual newline value... in text, it has only one backslash) with the actual newli ne character (0A).
